CONFIRMED — 2027

VA Disability Compensation COLA Increase: 3.6%

Status: CONFIRMED
Official Announcement: October 14, 2026
2027 COLA: 3.6%

The 2027 Cost-of-Living Adjustment (COLA) has officially been announced at 3.6% by the Social Security Administration.

This replaces earlier projections, including The Senior Citizens League's final estimate of 3.5%.

Because annual VA disability compensation adjustments follow the Social Security COLA percentage, the confirmed 3.6% adjustment establishes the basis for the 2027 VA disability compensation increase.

The increase takes effect December 1, 2026, and will be reflected in payments beginning in January 2027.

What Does the COLA Actually Increase?

This is where some headlines about a "3.6% VA increase" can get misleading.

The COLA applies to VA disability compensation rates, including qualifying dependent additions and Special Monthly Compensation (SMC).

That means the adjustment can affect:

  • Your basic VA disability compensation rate.

  • Additional compensation for qualifying dependents.

  • Special Monthly Compensation (SMC), if applicable.

It does not mean every payment or benefit you receive from VA automatically increases by 3.6%.

Education benefits and other VA programs may operate under their own rates, formulas, and adjustment schedules.

For example, Chapter 31 Veteran Readiness and Employment and Chapter 35 Survivors' and Dependents' Educational Assistance have separate payment schedules, with updated rates effective October 1, 2026.

Does This Apply to Me?

The 3.6% COLA adjusts VA disability compensation payment rates.

How much an individual payment changes depends on the applicable disability rating, qualifying dependents, Special Monthly Compensation, and other relevant compensation provisions.

Veterans receiving multiple VA benefits should review each benefit separately rather than assuming their entire monthly VA income will increase by 3.6%.

Do I Need to Do Anything?

No. You do not need to file a new disability claim or request a COLA increase.

The adjustment is applied automatically to the applicable VA disability compensation rates.

When Will the New Rates Take Effect?

December 1, 2026: The adjusted VA compensation rates take effect.

January 2027: Veterans begin receiving payments reflecting the updated rates.

The official COLA percentage is now confirmed. Individual payment amounts can be verified against VA's updated compensation tables once published.

Important: Estimates are always estimates, especially when the VA has its own way of doing math. This calculator applies the 3.6% COLA to your current monthly disability compensation and should provide a reasonable estimate of your 2027 payment. However, VA calculates and rounds individual compensation rates according to its own procedures, so we cannot guarantee our results will match your official payment exactly.
