“Sometimes you have to tell your story a thousand times to finally hear the echo.”

— Not The Shaman

I came to understand the meaning of those words during my first two years as a therapist intern at Prospect Courtyard, part of Haven for Hope, a reintegration campus in San Antonio, Texas.

Prospect Courtyard was a place where people could find a safe place to sleep, store their belongings, and simply exist without first having to overcome their addictions, their struggles, or the circumstances that brought them there.

I spent countless hours there, often on days when I wasn't working, simply sitting with people and listening.

Some would tell me the same story every time we met. The same experiences. The same heartbreak. The same pain. And I would listen.

Over time, I began to recognize something remarkable. Although the stories were often the same, the way people told them wasn't always the same. Sometimes a new detail emerged. Sometimes an emotion surfaced. Sometimes they began asking questions they hadn't considered before.

They weren't necessarily telling me their stories because they needed me to understand.

Sometimes they were telling their stories because they were still trying to understand them themselves.

That's where my quote was born.

And that's part of why this page exists.

You don't need to have your life figured out. You don't need a story with a happy ending. You don't need to be healed, sober, successful, or even certain about what your experiences mean.

You just need to be willing to tell your story.

Because sometimes the person who most needs to hear it is you.

And sometimes, someone else needs to hear it too.
