Women Veterans Can Now Schedule

VA Gynecology Without a Primary Care Referral

Effective December 4, 2025

Women veterans receiving VA health care can now schedule appointments directly with VA gynecology without first obtaining a referral from their VA primary care provider.

The change removes an additional step that previously could delay access to gynecological care.

Does this apply to me?

If you're enrolled in VA health care and need gynecological care through VA, you can now contact gynecology directly to request an appointment.

You don't need to schedule a primary-care appointment simply to obtain the referral first.

What kind of care does this include?

VA gynecology provides care involving issues such as:

Abnormal bleeding, Pelvic pain, Menopause, Contraception, Cervical cancer screening and abnormal Pap results, Other reproductive and gynecological health concerns

The specific services available can vary by VA facility.

Do I need to do anything?

If you need gynecological care, contact your VA medical center and ask to schedule directly with gynecology or women's health.

If the care you need isn't available at your VA facility, VA can determine whether you're eligible to receive that care through Community Care.

Why this matters

It's one less unnecessary appointment standing between a veteran and the medical care she needs.

You don't need permission from primary care just to see VA gynecology anymore.
