I'm Sorry, I Fucked Up

I have two amazing, incredible sons. One is 18 and in college, and the other is 11 and an A+ homeschool student.

I was thinking today that I've probably apologized to them more than I've apologized to any other person in my entire life.

And I'm proud of that.

There's a certain depth to humility that comes from looking at your child and saying, "I'm sorry. I fucked up."

And it's a tough one.

I didn't have that as a child. I grew up in an incredibly abusive home where I was beaten within an inch of my life at least once a week, sometimes multiple times in the same week.

And I've never raised a hand to my children. Not once.

I made that pledge long before I ever had kids of my own. I knew I would never be the destructive force that my mother was.

And I still wasn't a perfect father, because I'm not a perfect man.

I've made mistakes throughout my life.

I wasn't always humble. I can't even say I'm always humble today. I try to be, and then there are times when my ego definitely fills the room.

And that's okay, because I'm not Buddha, and I'm not Jesus. I'm just me. I'm trying to figure it out as I go along, like I've always done.

That means sometimes I'll fuck up.

Guess what? You'll fuck up too.

The question isn't whether or not you'll make a mistake. The question is whether you can say you're sorry when you do.

You only have to grow past yesterday.
